About the Role

Total Care Recruitment is currently recruiting for an experienced and compassionate Youth Worker on behalf of our client, a specialist provider of residential care for children and young people with complex needs.

Our client operates small, therapeutic childrens homes, providing highly individualised care within stable, nurturing and homely environments.

The children and young people supported may have experienced significant trauma, disrupted attachments and adverse life experiences. As a result, they can present with complex emotional and behavioural needs, including emotional dysregulation, risk-taking behaviours, aggression, difficulties with relationships and other trauma-related behaviours.

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who understands that behaviour is a form of communication and who can provide a calm, compassionate and consistent response to young people during both everyday situations and times of crisis.

Key Responsibilities

As a Youth Worker, you will:

Provide high-quality day-to-day care and support to children and young people within a residential setting.

Create a caring, safe and secure environment that promotes young people’s wellbeing.

Support young people with their physical, emotional, behavioural and developmental needs.

Assist with routines, education, appointments, activities and daily living tasks.

Build positive relationships through consistent, nurturing and trauma-informed practice.

Support young people during challenging or crisis situations and help them develop healthier coping strategies.

Promote positive outcomes in areas including life skills, health, education, therapy, family relationships and emotional wellbeing.

Contribute to care planning, risk assessments, safety plans and behaviour support plans.

Maintain accurate and professional records, including shift reports, handovers and care documentation.

Work collaboratively with colleagues, management and other professionals.

Attend team meetings, training, supervision and case discussions.

Support the day-to-day running of the residential home.

Undertake domestic duties including cooking, cleaning and laundry to maintain a comfortable and homely environment.

Follow safeguarding, health and safety, medication and organisational procedures at all times.

Essential Criteria

Applicants must have:

A minimum of 1 year’s experience working with challenging behaviours.

A minimum Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject.

A full UK or Irish driving licence, held for more than 1 year, with no more than 3 penalty points.

The ability to obtain an Enhanced AccessNI or Enhanced DBS check.

Willingness to register with, or current registration with, the Northern Ireland Social Care Council (NISCC) where applicable.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

The ability to remain calm, professional and compassionate in challenging situations.

Desirable Criteria

Degree in a relevant subject.

At least 1 year’s experience supporting traumatised children and young people who display challenging or pain-based behaviours.

Hours & Benefits

32,946.42 per annum

Average 38 hours per week

2 sleepovers

Pro rata equivalent of 33 days’ annual leave, including bank holidays

Ongoing training, supervision and professional development

Opportunity to make a meaningful difference to the lives of children and young people

A regular shift is 25 hours, consisting of 17 hours awake working time and 8 hours paid sleepover. Shift patterns are determined by the needs of the service and the young people.

Who We’re Looking For

We are particularly interested in candidates who are resilient, empathetic and relationship-focused.

You should understand the impact trauma can have on a young person’s behaviour and be able to provide consistent boundaries while maintaining a supportive and nurturing approach.

If you have experience working with young people with complex or challenging behaviours and want to develop your career within children’s residential care, we would love to hear from you.
